punny, pretentious and verbose
it needs to be more than just the name of the building... it needs to be a name that describes the project to be successful.
the need to come up with a title, along feedback from with the mid-term critique last wednesday, led me to outline (post thesis test) the ideas that I want to discuss during the final review presentation:
DISCUSSION POINTS
Reinforcing the Grid: The Western Energy Exchange
(what do you think of my title? /all of my peers dislike it)
Background: Revisit and Reuse
(Revisit and Reuse) The Power Grid
The goal is to convert the power grid to sustainable energy sources.
(Revisit and Reuse) The Trading Floor
Describe trading processes
Bartering, cash, credit, futures
Chalkboard, Pit, Handheld
Describe trading institutions
Many have closed doors, now just online
Existing- why they are still around
Stability of economy, Judgement/Safety, Efficiency
Culture of traders (human institution)
Describe trading commodities
Butter, eggs, cheese- the old marketplace
Conversion to energy
(Revisit and Reuse) The Building
Revisit old use with new model
Revisit concepts of preservation in reuse
Revisit and Reuse the architectural ideas of the old building in the design of the new
The Design
Trading Floor
Tour, as a trader
Vertical “floor”
Array of galleries
Variety of spaces, spontaneous organization
Technology: handhelds, screens, stations
Tour, as a member of the press
Tour, as a visitor
Façade/ Materials/ Structure
One plus one equals one
Materials
Structure
some notes:
The idea is not that the building demonstrates how individual buildings can produce energy or reduce energy use, but rather that not all buildings can produce or reduce. The building highlights the fact that energy is important to us as a society. Instead or providing a new model for energy independence, it is providing an orrortunity for the old model of energy distribution to be revisisted in a way that promotes sustainability.
- how can existing structures from the past (the built environment, the power grid, trading floor) be revisited to serve us best today- and in the future?
Facts:
Superannuate: to set aside or discard as old-fashioned or obsolete.
Future energy needs are increased, resources diminished
According to about dot com: Adaptive Reuse, or Re-use, is a process that adapts buildings for new uses while retaining their historic features.
The power grid- our infrastructure is built upon it; the most sustainable energy solution looks to changing the grid so that the power it provides is not finite or environmentally destructive.
The trading floor- the environment is efficient and important to trade;
The built environment- build within the city, build on existing buildings, keep historic buildings vital for use.
- How can the fundamental tension between real and virtual space be resolved? How can the advantages of real and virtual space be allowed to coexist?
