The Light at the End of the Tunnel is Dramatic and Nuanced

I have a thing or two to learn about architectural photography. The above photo was taken from a book entitled Gerald Zugmann: Blue Universe that another student showed me this week. I highly recommend the book to model and photography fans alike; it shows photographs of models from the firm Coop Himmelblau. My apologies, however, for my own amateur photography on previous (and who am I kidding, future) posts.

In the same book I found an example of a neoclassical building that has been added onto, the Ronchaer Theater in Vienna (below, although I can’t tell if this got built, I looked it up and couldn’t find anything). For good measure, take a look at the Reichstag renovation and Hearst tower by Norman Foster; he seems to have dabbled in the mixing of old and new construction (some neoclassical and some not). Two of these examples are small additions that I believe are successful in honoring the existing building, but the third, the Heart Tower project currently under construction in Manhattan, I don’t believe is very responsive to the form or character of the existing building. It is important to me that my project respects the existing building.

This has been a busy week for me; I am taking two other classes besides studio, and both of those classes required me to complete big projects for this week. In addition, our studio midterm is this coming Wednesday and I have a lot to do to prepare for it. On Thursday after the review I will make a trip to Eugene to have a pin-up and discussion with some professors and peers that I have set up time to talk with. Sometimes, it is important to get outside opinions, and talking with some people who have given me good direction in the past is, I think, a good way to ensure that I am on the right track.

When all of this activity is said and done I will post again; until then, wish me luck!

Cool photos mary. I hope your project sets up similar relations to that of coop Himmelblau. That would be sick!
